Dominik Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from Leipzig

Hungary midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has signed for Liverpool from RB Leipzig.

Szoboszlai, 22, becomes their second midfield signing of the summer transfer window, after Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton & Hove Albion.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke of his delight at adding the midfielder's quality to his squad.

"We already have a little knowledge of Dominik as an opponent because we had a couple of really tough games against Red Bull Salzburg when he was a player there," said Klopp. "I think everyone who saw those fixtures will have realised that even at that stage he was a really interesting prospect.

"I'm pretty sure he was still a teenager at that time and since then he has made some big strides – moving to Leipzig, doing really, really well in the Bundesliga, playing for the Hungary national team and then becoming captain of his national team at an incredibly young age.

"These are proper positives and this is even before we even think about his qualities as a footballer. I will not say too much about them at this stage except they are definitely the kind which will hopefully bring a lot of enjoyment and also help us to get results."

Szoboszlai joins Liverpool after two-and-half years with the Bundesliga club, where he made 91 appearances in all competitions. He scored 20 goals and provided 22 assists, helping them to successive German Cup successes in 2022 and 2023.

Prior to his move to Germany, Szoboszlai came through the ranks at Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, and played a huge part as they won four consecutive league titles.

At international level he has 32 caps and seven goals for Hungary, having made his bow in March 2019 against Slovakia.

Liverpool fans could get their first glimpse of Szoboszlai when they play Karlsruher on 19 July.

Szoboszlai, who will wear the No 8 shirt, will hope to make his Premier League debut on the opening weekend of the season at Chelsea on Sunday 13 August.
